Some resemble little plastic balls, while others come in the form of blocks or mats which are fibrous, while others are spiral shaped. The Importance Of Experimentation
You will want to try out different types of filter media to decide which is best for your pond. Purchase a mixture of ridged balls, media pads and plastic strips. Some are sold pre-cut while others are available by foot. However, irrespective of which type you buy, there are three characteristics which you must pay close attention to, which are the surface area, durability and density.
For surface area you will want as much as possible. The reason for this is because it gives the good bacteria more space for growth. Durability is essential as you want filter media that will last as long as possible, resisting wear. The density also has to be just right. If you buy media pads, they will typically come in four different densities so this gives them an advantage over the other options.
Density also influences water flow rate, and allows for superior bacterial colonization. When you use multiple filter media types, you will maximize both the mechanical and biological filtration capabilities of your pond, which is a necessity for any system that is enclosed.
Filter Balls
Filter balls have lots of surface area, are simple to clean and can be reused. They also assist in keeping the pond water pristine and clear. They are much lighter than traditional tools such as porous stone and because they will match the shape of any filter box in which they are placed, they can last for a long time. Filter Media Pads
